Putting the law on(the)line: digitising legal docs with Greg Kempe

When: 24 January 2017 from 6:00 p.m.

Where: JoziHub Main EVENT SPACE

Happy new year Joburg Hacks and Hackers. We're kicking off 2017 with a special guest from Code4SA who'll be videoconferencing in from Cape Town to talk about the importance of, and difficulties involved in, digitising the law and putting legal documents online.

Greg Kempe is Code4SA's chief technologist, and one of the many projects that he's overseen is openbylaws.org.za, a repository of municipal rules and regulations which would exist only in the dusty paper archives of a town hall were if it didn't exist.

Greg is hugely experienced in the processes of gaining access to laws and the challenges involved around copyrights. He can also explain why it's so important to get more of our legislation online in formats that are accessible and readable by all. Preferably in a standardised way like Akoma Ntoso

Through looking at Openbyelaws and other examples of legal repositories around the world,  we'll look at some of the opportunities that exist for civic hackers and journalists in Gauteng, and discuss potential collaborations and knowledge sharing for our own project around the most important legal document of all, #HackTheConstitution
